General FAQ

The challenge begins on January 1st and ends on November 30th. It is divided into three quarters, plus two months.

There are three types of challenges: Elevation, Distance, and Duration. These are further divided into multiple levels of series to accommodate the abilities of participants. All types will have quarterly and annual goals commitment.

Participants may select up to two challenges, but they must be of different types (e.g., Elevation and Distance). To nullify your pledged donation, you must successfully complete the goal requirements for each selected challenge individually.

Carryover is not allowed. Doing extra will help you achieve your end-of-year goals. Every quarter is a reset to reach your minimum quarterly goal until you reach your end-of-year goals.

This is to ensure that participants reach at least the minimum goals to avoid penalties (consistency). Participants need to do more than their quarterly goals to reach their end-of-year goals. It is up to them to plan their calendar and fill the required gaps.

Please inform your chapter leads. You may exit without penalty.

Annual challenge enrollment will close on January 15th. However, this year you will have the option to enroll in truncated annual challenges starting from the second quarter (Q2). You can also participate in and enjoy short-term challenges throughout the year.

Yes, you can switch your challenge type during the cooling-off period, which ends on January 30th. After that, you will be locked in the challenge you have chosen.

Technical FAQ

Saval tracks your progress towards quarterly and yearly goals using data from your connected fitness devices (like Strava, Garmin, etc.). If you haven't already, create or enable an account with your preferred fitness tracking app.

Consistent workout recording is essential for accurate tracking. Your exercise data is transmitted from your fitness app to Saval, where it's processed and presented to you.

This year, we are expanding our integration options to include Garmin, iOS Health, and Google Fit, providing greater flexibility in how you track your activities. While Strava offers a robust platform for recording various activities, we recognize the importance of offering diverse options for our users.

No worries! Creating a Strava account is free and takes just a few minutes. Once you're set-up, start recording your workouts, and Saval will automatically start tracking your progress toward your goals. Remember, We pull the data backdated to Jan 1, 2024, and if you have recorded your data from Jan 1 and forgot to sync, we will still pull the data to compute against your goals.

No, you do not need to purchase a Strava subscription for Saval to collect information about your activities.  A basic free membership is sufficient for data collection

While we are collecting all data regarding your activities and your profile information from Strava, we will only be using the distance, elevation, time, watts, kilojoules, and activity type information to calculate your progress against the challenges.

Yes, but only if you permit them. During the Saval authorization process, you'll be asked to choose which data you want to share. You can select:

  • Public activities only: Only your publicly visible Strava activities will be counted towards your Saval progress.

  • All activities (including private): This allows Saval to access and use data from all your Strava activities, including those marked as "Only me." This means your private activity distance, time, and elevation will contribute to your progress in Saval challenges.

You can re-authorize your connected devices or apps to ensure successful integration. If you encounter any issues, please contact your chapter leads or our support staff for assistance.

Saval uses 3rd party tools Google/Facebook for secure login to Saval’s dashboard. It is also a way for Saval to link the email you provided during the registration and your Strava account to either a Google or Facebook account.  Once the link has been made, you would be able to access your dashboard at https://app.saval.org/dashboard.html by logging in using the same Google or Facebook account.

It is OK if you used non Gmail or Facebook emails (example yahoo or hotmail) at registration.  You will be clicking the link sent to your email you used at registration.  By clicking that link and logging in using your Google or Facebook account you will be able to complete the account linking and authorize Strava.

Although you could use the same link, you do not need to.  You could use our Apps to monitor and be engaged with the community (preferred) or you can use  https://app.saval.org/dashboard.html to access the dashboard once you successfully completed the account linking and authorization.
